Hydrogen has been a focus topic for the Dutch industry for a long time already. As part of the aim to become fully circular by 2050, the Netherlands’ government has set clear ambitions when it comes to hydrogen. The Dutch Energy Agreement for sustainable growth includes 40 participating companies and the Dutch government. Together, they have agreed to limit the use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gases. By 2035, all newly sold private cars should be emission-free. The focus in the Netherlands is much more on the production of green hydrogen, using clean energy to produce hydrogen from water. The Dutch Cleantech Region, for instance, aims to produce hydrogen by using waste heat. The market is being driven by the long lifespan and efficiency of products manufactured by Dutch companies. Pit Point, which builds hydrogen gas stations in the Netherlands, and KIWA, which provides certification in the field of hydrogen.

According to the report titled "Netherland Automotive Fuel Cell Market Overview, 2027" published by Actual Market Research, the automotive fuel cell market in the Netherlands is expected to grow at a CAGR of nearly 50% during the forecast period. Hydrogen fuel cells and Methanol fuel are available on the basis of fuel type. Hydrogen fuel cells are in high demand due to their availability and the fact that they are clean and flexible energy sources to support a zero-carbon energy strategy. On the basis of power output, three types of fuel cells are available; below 100 KW power fuel cell; 100 to 200 KW power fuel cell; and above 200 KW power fuel cell. 100 to 200 KW power fuel cells have lower demand than below 100 KW power fuel cells because they are suitable for limited types of vehicles and they are expensive. Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) are a sustainable means of power generation through the electrochemical conversion of hydrogen-containing fuels, especially in portable, stationary, and automotive applications.

A large wind park is being planned by the Dutch hydrogen industry, Vattenfall, in the North Sea. To produce clean hydrogen, that is possible only by wind electricity generation. This clean hydrogen is intended to be used for industry or heavy road trucks to facilitate their decarbonisation. Shell launched its first hydrogen refuelling station in Hoofddorp, near Amsterdam. In the future, there are plans to run hydrogen buses in Groningen, and vehicles at Schiphol Airport will also run either electrically or on hydrogen by 2030.

In Netherland transportation segment is expected to dominate the market due to the efforts of the government to achieve an emissions-free transport sector. Growth in automobile sector has a positive impact on the automotive fuel cell market. Many automobile and fuel cell manufacturing companies having a joint venture in Netherland. From 2016 to 2021 CAGR of methanol fuel cell was very low and during forecasted period CAGR will increase gradually. Below 100 KW power fuel cell are generally installed to light weight vehicles and it provides the sufficient power to vehicle during its working condition. 100 to 200 KW power fuel cell is suitable for vehicles which required medium range of power during different condition. Above 200 KW power fuel cell is suitable for commercial and high load vehicles and provides effective power to mining vehicles at working condition. Below 100 KW power fuel cell having high market share from year 2016 to 2021 and expected that it will have robust growth during forecasted period.

With 20 years of fuel cell excellence, Nedstack has established a leading position in the market for mission-critical high-power PEM fuel cell applications. Nedstack has an installed base of over 500 systems with the inclusion of the world's longest running PEM Power Plant, the world's first megawatt-sized PEM Power Plant, and the world's largest PEM Power Plant. Hyzon is a mobility company with an exclusive focus on hydrogen in commercial vehicles. Mainly focused on the hydrogen truck sector, Hyzon is also active in the fuel bus segment.

COVID-19 affected the industry by forcing the manufacturers to shut down the assembly lines and pushing the economy down. With almost zero vehicular movements, there wasn't any new requirement for fuel cells to be installed into new vehicles and spare fuel cells for replacements in already existing vehicles.
